Multi-storey residential development, Lytham, Lancashire:
This project for a development of luxury flats is located in a key location facing the Ribble estuary.
Taking full advantage of the views, this project was specifically sited to act as a focal point for other elements of a lmajor residental development, for which we acted as master planners.
Improvements to the underpass at Lancaster University:
The Lancaster University campus comprises a central pedestrian zone with vehicular traffic circulating around the perimeter, together with a traffic underpass immediately below Alexandra Square, the major public space on campus. Public transport disharges and picks up passengers in the underpass area. The area is noisy, suffers from traffic fumes and has virually no daylight. We prepared a solution which included new traffic-calming methods, introduced daylight through flush-glazed slots in the paving of the square above, provided a mechanical ventilation system and sound attenuation incorporated into a new light coloured wall and roof cladding system.
Colour and life was to be added through large-scale video panels which could be used for information, entertainment and advertising.
Wrea Green Housing:
On a former industrial site in the Lancashire village of Wrea Green we designed a group of linked houses and flats clustered around a series of irregular open spaces.
The recurring dilema of how best to deal with the motor car and road access within tightly grouped housing was resolved by creating an informal road system and by placing car parking underground.
Each house has dedicated secure parking with direct access to the basement, leaving the ground level approach largely car free.
Apartments, Preston:
On a tight urban site in the centre of preston we developed this project for a small apartment development, paying particular attention to the differing heights of neighbouring buildings and responding to the urban grain of the area.
The accommodation comprises two retail units at ground floor with residential units of varying sizes above.
A large penthouse at roof level benefits from roof-top views over the surrounding area.
West Lakes Science and Technology Park, Whitehaven, Cumbria:
West Lakes Science and Technology Park provides prestigious scientific research and development facilities focussed on bio-technology and related science disciplines.
Following our competition entry for a new innovation centre which provided incubator units for new start-up enterprises we were appointed to prepare a strategy plan for the whole 120 acre site which has been successfully implemented.
We were subsequently appointed to design the first phase of new buildings within the strategy plan.
