Windermere 01
Lakeland flagship store, Windermere:
This project was awarded a Civic Trust Award in 2007.
The awards jury report described the project as................."An attractive and successful project which combines exciting and contemporary design with the building's location in the historic and rural setting of the Lake District. The large semi-circular frontage makes a strong visual statement in glass, metal, marble and Lakeland stone, which welcomes and draws in the visitor. The curved sedum covered roof helps it to blend into the landscape and reflects the surrounding mountains and hills. Access has been a consideration throughout the design. This building sets a standard for contemporary intervention in a highly sensitive landscape".
Windermere 02
Lakeland Administrative Headquarters, Windermere:
Adjoining the Lakeland flagship store the new headquarters building provides high quality accommodation for office and call centre staff.
The Civic Trust Award was given to this project as a whole.
"One of the best modern buildings in Cumbria" is how the 2010 edition of the highly respected Pevsner Architectural Guide 'Buildings of England' describes this highly successful project.
Cable Court
Cable Court, Preston:
A speculative development of fifteen two-storey office units on a previously undeveloped site within the Preston North Development Area.
Built in short terraces, the units are arranged with a stepped profile to meet the client's requirement for each unit to be expressed individually.
High quality materials and an open arrangment of units has created a successful development.
We were subsequently appointed by the same client to design a larger development on the southern edge of Blackpool.
St George's
St George's Court, Kirkham:
This development of two-storey speculative offices is designed to provide a modern working environment with a human scale, enhanced by the use of a range of warm materials.
The buildings are designed and constructed to a high standard and are arranged in a courtyard form to provide an attractive and cohesive layout, each unit being expressed in a clearly identifiable manner.
Meadow Bank
Meadowbank Business Park, Kendal:
A further phase of the Meadowbank Business Park on a highly visible site on the northern edge of Kendal comprising new speculative offices.
Materials include slate roofing, natural stone and roughcast render walls and stained timber joinery.
Shoreline
Shoreline Business Park, Sandside, Milnthorpe, Cumbria:
Located on a prominent site overlooking the Kent estuary this development of eight commercial units started life as a proposed residential development. The plannng authority steadfastly refused to accept any non-employment uses on the site resulting in a fundamental change of brief.
The estuarine location raised significant flood risk issues which were resolved following detailed negotiations with the Environment Agency.
Opticians Milnthorpe
Optician's premises, Milnthorpe, Cumbria:
Located on the south side of the market square and within the village conservation area this project provides substantially improved facilities for reception, waiting, consultation and testing for the village optician together with a generous area for the selection and purchase of spectacles. High quality materials have been used throughout with care taken to create an open flow of space within the interior
Built of local stone and slate the building provides a handsome new addition at the south entrance to the village square.
Toll Bar Sedbergh
Toll Bar Workshops, Sedbergh, Cumbria:
Although located in Cumbria, the site for this development stands within the Yorkshire Dales National Park and is thus subject to their planning regime.
Great care was taken with respect to all aspects of design including the selection of materials which are locally sourced throughout.
The Phase One development was carried out by English Partnerships as agents for the Rural Development Commission. A further phase, for which we were also responsible, has been carried out by a private developer.
Pye Motors Kendal
Pye Motors, Kendal
The design provides modern and welcoming accommodation comprising main reception, sales and car showroom area, together with individual offices and vehicle servicing areas at ground floor with additional administrative and meeting areas at first floor.
The shape of the site has been exploited to create a building with maximum frontage to the A6 thus establishing its presence on one of the primary routes into Kendal. The showroom faces roughly north and east which together with solar control glazing minimises the risk of overheating from solar gain. The fully glazed north and east showroom elevations are counterbalance by the vehicle servicing area which is clad in local limestone.
